Hoisin sauce is a condiment often used in Chinese or Korean cooking and it is probably one of my favorite stir fry sauces. You could buy it at the supermarket but as often is the case with products in the Asian aisle, they are filled with ingredients that have letters and numbers and since Hoisin is so easy to make, there is honestly only upsides to making your own!

Ingredients

• 1/4 cup light and low sodium soy sauce
• 2 tablespoons peanut or almond butter
• 1 tbsp honey or coconut nectar
• 2 tsp rice vinegar
• 2 tsp sesame oil
• a pinch freshly ground pepper
• 1 tsp miso paste
• a pinch five spice powder
• 1 clove garlic, minced
• 1/2 tsp chili sauce (optional)

Instructions

Blend all the ingredients in a blender and voilà! As easy as that. Makes 1/3 cup.

Serving suggestions

• Brush it on cut up vegetables (eggplant is a good one….) or meat and then grill or sauté on the bbq
• It is a key ingredient when making a peanut dipping or saté sauce
• Great to use in stir fried noodles and rice
